작가 소개
Jana Sim is a Korean-born book artist
whose practice bridges traditional craft with contemporary interpretation.
In 2002, she moved to the U.S. to pursue her passion for art
and studied painting at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
There, she discovered the field of book arts, which later became the foundation of her work.
She earned her BFA in Painting and MFA in Book & Paper at Columbia College Chicago.
Her work has been exhibited internationally
and collected by major universities, museums, and private collectors.
Returning to Korea in 2012, she began learning traditional Korean joinery and changho (doors and windows)
from her father — an artisan of Seoul Cultural Heritage.
This experience became the turning point in her work,
merging the structural sensibility of changho with the narrative and tactile approach of book arts.
Through paper, textile, and digital media, her work explores the idea of doors as portals
— between people, places, time, and memory.
Rather than replicating tradition, she reimagines it through personal experience and contemporary aesthetics,
presenting changho not as an architectural element but as a language of connection.
Her projects span artist books, knit-based interpretations of door patterns, AI-generated reimaginings of traditional forms,
and motif-based pattern works. At the core of each project is the question: how does one sense, carry, and reinterpret tradition?
심자나는 전통과 현대, 구조와 감각을 잇는 북 아티스트입니다.
2002년 미국으로 건너가 일리노이 대학교 어바나-샴페인에서 회화를 전공하던 중 북아트를 접하며 본격적인 작업을 시작했고,
이후 컬럼비아 칼리지 시카고에서 북&페이퍼 MFA를 취득하였습니다.
그녀의 작품은 국내외 전시를 통해 소개되었고, 여러 대학 및 박물관, 개인 소장가에 의해 수집되고 있습니다.
2012년 귀국 후에는 서울시 무형문화재 소목장 아버지에게 전통 창호 기술을 배우며,
북아트의 구조적 접근과 창호의 정밀함을 결합한 작업을 이어오고 있습니다.
그녀의 작업은 문이라는 구조를 중심으로, 공간과 사람, 기억과 시간을 연결하는 매개체로서의 전통을 새롭게 해석합니다.
전통을 재현하기보다는, 그것을 해체하고 다시 엮어내며, 책, 니트, 패턴, 디지털 이미지 등 다양한 물성을 통해 감각의 문을 만들어갑니다.
