Created using a Crown binding structure, this work features slightly translucent handmade Abaca paper crafted by the artist, with ribbons forming phrases such as "Can you say that again?", "I don’t understand.", "I’m sorry?", and "What?" embedded between the sheets. The translucency of the paper symbolizes the vulnerability of having one’s English skills exposed, capturing the feelings of embarrassment and awkwardness in those moments. The text appears as if it is permanently fixed within the paper, evoking a sense of being frozen in time and reflecting the artist’s discomfort and powerlessness in such situations.

This work visually represents the complex thought process I experience when switching between languages—hearing English, thinking in Korean, translating, and then speaking in English. Using the structure of Möbius strips, I explored the confusion and complexity that arise during this process.

The piece includes three Möbius strips: one intact, and two progressively cut to create increasingly intricate connections. As the strips are cut, the sentences become harder to read, reflecting the tangled and chaotic nature of switching between languages. The final connected rings symbolize the intertwined state of language and thought, where clarity becomes elusive and meaning is hard to grasp.

    This work combines Korean and English to create an alphabet book. Using the structure of Hangul, I reconfigured the English alphabet to explore the structural differences and intersections between the two languages.
