it is a crucial medium that shapes our identity and experiences. 

My works explore the psychological challenges, 

cultural boundaries, and new possibilities 

that arise from living between two languages, Korean and English. 

Additionally, they delve into the themes of adaptation 

and the reconstruction of identity 

when encountering new environments.

1. ESL I (2008)

• 설명:

Crown 바인딩 구조로 제작된 이 작품은 작가가 직접 수작업으로 만든 약간 반투명한 아바카 종이를 사용했으며, 종이 사이에 "Can you say that again?", "I don’t understand.", "I’m sorry?", "What?"와 같은 문장을 리본으로 형상화하여 삽입했습니다. 반투명한 종이는 당시의 영어 실력이 그대로 드러나 보이는 감정을 시각적으로 표현하며, 그 드러남이 부끄럽고 어색했던 순간들을 담아냈습니다. 문장이 마치 종이에 딱 박제된 것처럼 고정되어 있어, 그 당황스러움과 무력감의 감정을 더욱 강조합니다.

• Description:

Created using a Crown binding structure, this work features slightly translucent handmade Abaca paper crafted by the artist, with ribbons forming phrases such as "Can you say that again?", "I don’t understand.", "I’m sorry?", and "What?" embedded between the sheets. The translucency of the paper symbolizes the vulnerability of having one’s English skills exposed, capturing the feelings of embarrassment and awkwardness in those moments. The text appears as if it is permanently fixed within the paper, evoking a sense of being frozen in time and reflecting the artist’s discomfort and powerlessness in such situations.

2. F (2009)

• 설명:

이 작품은 제가 미술사 수업 시간에 사용했던 교과서의 일부를 태워 터널 북 형태로 제작한 작품입니다. 영어를 배우면서 겪었던 어려움을 반영한 작업입니다. 작품에 포함된 소각된 페이지와 조각들은 제가 실제로 공부했던 교과서와 그 안에 적어놓았던 메모들로 구성되어 있습니다.

이 작품은 그때 느꼈던 강렬한 스트레스, 좌절감, 그리고 무력감을 표현한 작업입니다.

• Description:
  This work is a tunnel book created using burned pages from the textbooks I used in my art history class. It reflects the struggles I faced while learning English as a second language. The burned pages and fragments included in this book are taken from the very textbooks I studied, along with my own handwritten notes. This piece expresses the intense stress, frustration, and sense of helplessness I experienced during those moments

3. ESL II (2009)

• 설명:

터널 북 스타일로 제작된 이 작품은 제가 영어를 바라보는 방식을 담고 있습니다. 언어를 이해하지 못할 때, 그 언어는 단순한 텍스트를 넘어 놀라운 디자인으로 다가옵니다. 영어는 텍스트이지만, 제게는 아름다운 형태와 패턴으로 보이기도 했습니다.

• Description:

This tunnel book reflects how I perceive English. When I don’t understand a language, it transforms from simple text into a remarkable design. English is text, but to me, it also appears as beautiful shapes and patterns.

4. Never-ending Questions (2009)

• 설명:
  이 작품은 미술사 과제를 받을 때부터 끝날 때까지 끊임없이 이어졌던 질문들에서 시작되었습니다. 터널 북 스타일로 제작된 이 책은 질문의 반복과 혼란스러운 과정을 시각적으로 표현합니다.

• Description:
  This work stems from the constant questions that arose from the moment I was assigned an art history paper until its completion. Created in a tunnel book style, it visually represents the repetitive and confusing process of questioning.

5. Konglish (2010)

• 설명:
  이 작품은 제가 한국어, 영어, 그리고 콩글리시라는 세 언어를 통해 언어와 정체성의 경계를 탐구한 작업입니다. 책에는 제가 실제로 경험했던 언어적 차이와 오해에서 비롯된 유머러스한 이야기가 담겨 있습니다. 한국어와 영어를 모두 이해하는 사람은 두 언어를 비교하며 이야기를 따라갈 수 있지만, 한 언어만 이해하는 사람에게는 반대편이 단순히 시각적 패턴으로 보이도록 설계했습니다. 이 작업을 통해 언어가 문화적 맥락에 따라 어떻게 다르게 해석되고, 정체성 형성에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 시각적으로 표현하고자 했습니다.

• Description:
  This work explores the boundaries of language and identity through three languages: Korean, English, and Konglish. It is based on my personal experiences with language differences and the humorous misunderstandings that arise from them. The book is designed so that those who understand both Korean and English can compare the two sides of the stories, while those who understand only one language see the other as visual patterns. Through this work, I aimed to visually express how language is interpreted differently depending on cultural contexts and how it shapes identity.

6. Language Möbius (2011)

• 설명:

이 작품은 영어를 듣고, 한국어로 생각하고, 다시 번역한 후 영어로 말하는 과정에서 머릿속에서 일어나는 복잡한 사고의 순환을 시각적으로 표현한 작업입니다. 뫼비우스 띠의 구조를 활용해, 언어 전환 과정에서 느꼈던 혼란과 복잡함을 형상화했습니다.

세 개의 뫼비우스 띠 중 하나는 완전한 형태로, 나머지 두 개는 절단 과정을 거쳐 점점 더 복잡한 연결을 만들어냅니다. 절단된 띠는 문장이 점차 읽기 어려운 형태로 변하며, 언어가 뒤엉키는 혼란스러운 과정을 나타냅니다. 마지막에는 연결된 두 개의 링이 만들어지는데, 이는 언어와 사고가 뒤엉켜 명확히 이해하거나 읽을 수 없게 되는 상태를 상징합니다.

Description:

This work visually represents the complex thought process I experience when switching between languages—hearing English, thinking in Korean, translating, and then speaking in English. Using the structure of Möbius strips, I explored the confusion and complexity that arise during this process.

The piece includes three Möbius strips: one intact, and two progressively cut to create increasingly intricate connections. As the strips are cut, the sentences become harder to read, reflecting the tangled and chaotic nature of switching between languages. The final connected rings symbolize the intertwined state of language and thought, where clarity becomes elusive and meaning is hard to grasp.

7. Meter (2011)

• 설명:
  이 작품은 영어로 된 어려운 텍스트를 읽을 때 느꼈던 스트레스를 시각적으로 표현한 작업입니다. 페이지마다 점차 상승하는 스트레스 게이지를 통해 언어를 이해하고 해석하는 과정에서 느꼈던 좌절감과 압박감을 형상화했습니다. 단어와 정보가 쌓이면서 점점 감당하기 어려워지는 심리적 상태를 시각적으로 담아낸 작품입니다.

• Description:
  This work visually represents the stress I felt when reading difficult English texts. Using progressively rising stress levels across the pages, it captures the frustration and pressure I experienced while trying to understand and process the language. The piece reflects the psychological state of feeling increasingly overwhelmed as words and information pile up, becoming harder to manage.

8. Both but Between (2021)

• 설명:
  이 작품은 한국어와 영어를 결합해 하나의 알파벳 북으로 만든 작업입니다. 한글의 구조를 바탕으로 영어 알파벳을 새롭게 재구성하며, 두 언어의 구조적 차이와 만남을 탐구했습니다. 책에 사용된 단어들은 제 정체성을 반영하며, 영어를 배우며 겪었던 혼란과 도전을 시각적으로 표현하고자 했습니다. 이 작업은 한국어를 모르는 사람에게는 새로운 언어의 형태를 보여주고, 두 언어를 모두 이해하는 사람에게는 두 언어가 교차하는 과정을 경험하게 합니다.

• Description:
  This work combines Korean and English to create an alphabet book. Using the structure of Hangul, I reconfigured the English alphabet to explore the structural differences and intersections between the two languages. The words chosen for the book reflect my identity and aim to visually express the challenges and confusion I experienced while learning English. For those unfamiliar with Korean, the book introduces a new form of language, while those who understand both languages can experience the intersection of the two.

9. Language Switch (2025)

• 설명:
  Language Switch는 일상 속에서 제가 한국어와 영어를 어떻게 경험하는지를 탐구한 아티스트 북입니다. 영어는 집중할 때는 언어로 들리지만, 집중하지 않을 때는 음악처럼 리듬감 있게 흐려지곤 합니다. 반면, 한국어는 항상 언어로 존재하며, 끌 수 없는 상시적인 느낌으로 다가옵니다. 이 작품은 두 언어가 저의 청각적 인식에 각기 다른 방식으로 영향을 미치는 과정을 담아냈습니다.

Description:

Language Switch is an artist book that explores how I experience Korean and English in daily life. English feels like language when I focus, but it often drifts into a rhythm, like music, when I’m not paying attention. Korean, on the other hand, always remains present as language, a constant presence I can’t turn off. This work captures how each language uniquely affects my auditory perception.

Conclusion: The Intersection of Language and Identity

The "Language & Identity" section features works that explore the complex intersections of language and identity. Inspired by my personal experiences, these pieces reflect the challenges, confusion, and new possibilities I’ve discovered while navigating life between two languages—Korean and English. Language is more than a tool for communication; it is a vital medium that shapes our identity and experiences. Through these works, I seek to examine the psychological and emotional impact of linguistic boundaries and cultural differences, translating them into artistic expression.
