Artist Statement../..Bio../..Resume
My works are Autobiographical art. The early works express my yearnings for my family and home country. My father is a Korean
traditional wood crafter who makes traditional Korean doors and some of the concepts and ideas were from my father’s works.
The traditional Korean door in my art works were a bridge linking me with family, friends and reminiscence .
I started with painting Korean doors but developed my own representations using book art structures. The doorway to me in
function was similar to a big book. A book opens you to a new space of mind and the two have in common that they link you to another
location.
The theme of my art changed as the time I spent in the United States became longer. I became more accustomed to living in the
U.S. and I spent less time missing Korea and my art became more centered on myself and my life. The recent works are based on my
struggles and triumphs living with two languages (Korean and English) and cultural differences between Korea and the U.S.
